Join this friendly, relaxed small-group tour to Stonehenge, Bath & the Cotswolds, and enjoy plenty of time to explore three iconic destinations. The mysterious Stonehenge is the world’s most famous pre-historic monument. The city of Bath is a designated world-heritage site, known for its Roman history & elegent architecture. The Cotswolds are the most beautiful part of the English countryside. This full-day tour is not rushed and provides plenty of time to explore these three incredible locations.
The journey begins by departing London to the west and travelling towards the countryside of the North Wessex Downs, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. Shortly before we reach Bath we’ll make a stop in the idyllic Cotswolds settlement of Castle Combe, described as the ‘prettiest village in England’. This is a place set in a different time, with only a few hundred inhabitants and historic buildings which are all many centuries old. Take a stroll through the quiet streets and along the river to absorb the charm of a true Cotswolds village.
Next we’ll make the short journey to one of the most beautiful cities in Britain; Bath. There will be plenty of time to explore here, allowing enough time to see all of the highlights. Upon arrival we’ll provide a walking-tour guide which will help lead you through all of the main locations around the city. Take in the historic Roman Baths; these fantastically preserved Roman ruins are the most important part of the city. Then, absorb the stunning Georgian architecture, one of the features that Bath is most known for today. Don’t miss the most famous buildings; the Royal Crescent, the Circus and the Pulteney Bridge. You may also wish to visit the Abbey Cathedral, the Jane Austen Centre, or one of the many museums and galleries. There is much to do, but there will be time to enjoy all of the highlights and also have some lunch.
In the afternoon we’ll depart Bath and travel through the Somerset countryside, passing delightful small towns and villages with their picture postcard thatched cottages, as we make our way to our next destination; Stonehenge. This is the most famous stone-circle in the world, and thought to be around 4,500 years old, yet we still do not fully understand its origin. A variety of theories have been suggested, including that Stonehenge is a solar calendar, burial site and place of worship, among others. We’ll have ample time to explore Stonehenge, including the indoor and outdoor exhibitions, as well as the iconic stones themselves.
We’ll leave Stonehenge towards the end of the afternoon, returning to London and the Mercure Kensington Hotel by 6.00pm.
