The day begins by departing London to the North-West towards the scenic Chiltern Hills, and it won’t be long before we are travelling through the quintessentially English countryside of The Cotswolds. This is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, famed for its beautiful countryside landscape, charming villages and honey-coloured stone cottages. Our first stop will be the small town of Burford, known as the ‘Gateway to the Cotswolds’; a place where many houses date back nearly 600 years. While here you can check-out the cathedral-eque church and stroll along the high street to visit a mix of independent family-run shops. Next, we’ll drive across the tiny bridge over the Windrush as we travel towards our next stop, Stow-on-the-Wold. This is the highest town in the Cotswolds, and is a jumble of ancient inns and antique shops located around the bustling market square. This historic town was a favourite of JRR Tolkien and a place from which he gained inspiration for Lord of the Rings. ‘Stow’ is also where the last battle of the English Civil War took place in 1646, and you’ll have time to wander through this typical Cotswolds town and have lunch.
This afternoon we’ll take a meandering drive through the rolling hills, travelling along narrow country lanes and passing farms, stables, country estates and historic lodges. We’ll continue our journey through the Cotswolds and our next stop is Bibury, often described as 'the prettiest village in England'. Here you can see and get up close to the iconic Arlington Row; a set of old weavers cottages that are now one of the symbols of the Cotswolds. Next we’ll continue travelling through the countryside along the winding lanes and on our way back to London we’ll stop in at Henley-on-Thames; a wealthy riverside trading town famous since Victorian times for it’s annual Royal Rowing Regatta. This is the spiritual home of English rowing and members of the rowing club here have won 124 Olympic medals, making it the most successful rowing club in the world. Take a stroll along the river Thames and through the town centre towards Friars Park, the former country home of The Beatles’ George Harrison. Departing Henley we’ll head back towards London, aiming to return to the Mercure Kensington Hotel by around 6.00pm.
